child wonder: charlotte love

I discovered the brilliantly fun work of stylist Charlotte Love while on an exploring mission on Instagram a few years back and fell immediately in love! With a few simple tricks and bags of imagination, she turns food into characters that never fail to raise our joy levels. Here, we find out how she keeps inspired.

Do you feel like you are doing the job you were intended to do?

I feel like I’m on the right track, I haven’t reached my goal, But I'm a perfectionist, I always want to do better and I know I can do better. I feel incredibly lucky to be doing a job that I enjoy and one that excites me. I love the whole process - coming up with ideas, making props and creating the imagery. I love being freelance and working for myself too. I've tried an office job and it wasn’t for me. I like to be up on my feet making things.

Describe a happy episode of your childhood that connects you to the creative person you've become.
I had a really happy childhood. I grew up in a large family, I’m 1 of 6 children and there was always lots of laughing and fighting! We would play, make up games, and watch a lot of films. There would always be a big pack of A4 white paper and a jug full of pens and pencils in the kitchen and we would sit at the table laughing and drawing. It was great!

What story/book do you associate with your childhood?
My Dad would tell us bedtime Stories most nights, and they were very funny which would make us all roll around laughing. I think a lot of the humour in my work is influenced from my family and my childhood. I now have my own daughter and stories before bed is my favourite time of day. I can’t wait to make up bed time stories and make her laugh.
How do you keep creative and full of wonder now as a grown-up?
Instagram inspires me massively. It’s the new magazine edited exactly to your taste as you get to choose who to follow. I can follow so many amazing artists from every creative platform - illustrators, photographers, fashion designers, make- up artists. I feel constantly inspired from this and sometimes a little overwhelmed too! I try to create something everyday for Instagram - it’s like my sketchbook. And when I’m being creative I feel my happiest.
Thank you Charlotte! You can follow her Instagram creative adventures here.
